Joy Harjo comes across as a strong willed person who has been through way too much pain and suffering. The thing that stuck out the most, was how much she loved her child. It seemed every time she brought him up, she always would say something that hinted towards how much passion she had for him. Joy truly cared about her family, almost too much. Her ability to forgive them for such harsh actions was almost ridiculous if you ask me. A great example would be when her husband got into a bar fight and ran away from the approaching police. She even said, "I should have left him then." But after some forgiving, she stayed with him. I'm not so sure that I would be able to do the same thing. That is probably her biggest weakness, her strong ability to forgive people. I do have to give her credit for handling everything as well as she did. Her personality was also a huge stand out. She read through the bible a few times, because she wanted to know why white people idolized it so much. Joy didn't just read it, she accepted it. She understood why we look up to the bible as way of life and actually admired the doings of Jesus. That really impressed me and showed me what type of person she really is. In writing her book, she made her personality stand out and I think that is a big reason why the book was so successful.
I agree with you. Joy Harjo is really a strong willed person. Even after going through her pain and suffering, she's still going. I like how you noticed that she really loved her child and how maybe she loved her family and little too much. I agree that she might have loved her family too much with how they treated her.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate that you had went to her session. You gave me some really great insights what you think of her. I coincide with the weakness of Joy Harjo. Plus the opinions that you had.
ReplyDeleteAs for me, if I was Joy Harjo and I'm too adapt to my cultural I probably have to forgive others too.
I respect Joy for still loving her family despite how she was treated in her youth. It is something that I admire and truly respect her deeply for.
