Brief Screening Report: 42

The hate and threats towards Jackie Robinson were made obvious throughout the movie.

The scene towards the beginning of the movie really set the tone of what the rest of the film would be like for Jackie Robinson. It begins at 6:00 Jackie and ends at 7:20. Jackie and his Negro League team, the Kansas City Monarchs, stopped at a gas station to get fuel on their way to Chicago. Jackie told the white man to fuel up their team bus and began walking towards the restroom. Right before Jackie walked in, the white man stopped him and forbid him to use the restroom. "Come on boy, you know you can't go in there." Jackie paused for and thought for a moment, the camera adjusted. Then Jackie told the man," take that hose out of the tank. "The white man stopped with a look of confusion and said, "What?". Jackie then said, " I said take it out, we'll get our 99 gallons of gas someplace else." The white man wisely gave in and allowed Jackie to use the restroom. This scene really gave me the thought the Jackie has very high integrity. He wasn't about to give their money to a man who wouldn't even allow him to use the toilet. You could see the look in his eyes, I was very impressed with this scene. I believe this was a building point for Jackie, to be intolerant of the hate. This became more and more difficult as the film went on, because he didn't have any choice, but to put up with it all of it.
